Does a 12V fridge need 240V built in?

No, not anymore.

If you're installing a 12V caravan fridge or camping fridge into a mobile situation, like a caravan, camper trailer, boat, 4x4 canopy or RV, we recommend installing a dedicated 12V only fridge.

Why a 12V only fridge?

It’s more reliable.
All low power compressors, like this one from Danfoss, run on 12V/24V DC power. If you buy a fridge with 240V built in, there’s a 240V transformer attached to your compressor. In our experience these 240V modules are less reliable than straight 12/24V DC, especially if you are at a caravan park and are subject to fluctuations in 240V AC power or a power surge.

It’s more efficient
By removing the 240V transformer your electrical system will be more efficient. As almost all caravans, RV’s and 4X4’s have a 12V battery bank and a smart battery charger, running your fridge directly from the battery is the simplest and most efficient method.

And cost you less
A 12/24V only fridge is usually cheaper to purchase, install and service.

How to set up a 12V fridge in your caravan, car or 4WD

Run your LED lights, water pump, fridge and DC appliances directly from your battery bank on the 12V circuit. When 240V power is available, like at a powered camp site, marina, or from a generator, use a smart battery charger to maintain your batteries.
