Does a 12V fridge need 240V built in?

It’s more reliable.

All low power compressors, like this one from Danfoss, run on 12V/24V DC power. If you buy a fridge with 240V built in, there’s a 240V transformer attached to your compressor. In our experience, these 240V modules are less reliable than straight 12/24V DC, especially if you are at a caravan park and are subject to fluctuations in 240V AC power or a power surge.

It’s more efficient

By removing the 240V transformer your electrical system will be more efficient. As almost all caravans, RV’s and 4X4’s have a 12V battery bank and a smart battery charger, running your fridge directly from the battery is the simplest and most efficient method.

And cost you less

A 12/24V only fridge is usually cheaper to purchase, install and service.
