Why we use Bushman fridges in our 4×4, 4WD and caravan builds

At Elevate Automotive, we’ve been using Bushman fridges across a wide range of custom vehicle builds for years. Bushman fridges have consistently proven to be one of the most reliable options on the market, particularly in harsh Australian conditions where consistent performance really matters.

The best types of fridges we typically install in different vehicles

We tailor each of our vehicle builds based on the customer’s unique needs – here’s some of the Bushman fridges we typically install, depending on configuration and vehicle type.

Upright fridges

Typically installed in Troop Carriers and some Ute canopy setups where vertical space is available.

Drawer fridges

Common in wagons and canopies, where access and space efficiency are important.

Chest fridges

Popular in canopies and wagons for their versatility and storage capacity.

Why we choose Bushman fridges

We recommend Bushman fridges because they stand out. They handle extreme heat far better than many alternative options. In Australian conditions, especially in remote and high-temperature environments, having a reliable fridge on the road is critical.

Bushman fridges also consume less power over a 24-hour period compared to many competitors, which makes a huge difference for off-grid setups where energy efficiency directly impacts how long a system can run.

Top tips for selecting the right fridge

Here’s some of our best tips for selecting a fridge for your vehicle.

Best fridges for 4x4s / canopies / 4WDs.

Consider available fridge space carefully (canopy height, drawer clearance) and allow for fridge slide requirements. Ensure there is enough clearance for the lid or door to open fully. Bushman fridges have a variety of sizes to suit many vehicles.

Best fridges for caravans.

Most people want to be able to run their fridge 24/7, so we generally recommend going with a 12V or 24V setup rather than 240V. Running a 240V fridge means you’re relying on your inverter constantly, which isn’t the most efficient use of your power system. Bushman upright fridges all work at 12V or 24V.

Best fridges for specialty vehicles (e.g. medical or technical setups).

Temperature stability and monitoring can be more important than size. Reliability and consistency are key factors in these builds – any Bushman fridge that suits your vehicle will work.

What car or caravan fridge features our customers value the most

The biggest priorities for our customers when choosing a fridge for their car or caravan are low power consumption, consistent performance and reliability. Customers want a fridge that just works, no matter where they are or how tough the conditions get, without putting excessive strain on their power system. Bushman ticks all of these boxes with ease.

Our most popular vehicle builds

4×4 / 4WD builds

Our most popular builds include full touring setups with dual battery systems, inverter setups, canopy fit-outs, and integrated fridge solutions. Utes and touring wagons are especially common, as customers look for reliable off-grid capability.

Caravan transformations

We upgrade caravans into fully off-grid systems with lithium battery upgrades, solar, and efficient refrigeration. Customers are increasingly wanting longer-term travel capability with minimal reliance on powered sites.

Marine

We focus on efficient, compact, and reliable electrical and refrigeration systems where space and power management are critical.

Epic builds we’ve completed

We’ve completed a wide range of standout builds, from fully custom canopy touring rigs designed for remote expeditions to complete caravan electrical overhauls for full-time travellers. Some of the most impressive projects are those where we integrate high-capacity lithium systems, solar, and efficient refrigeration to allow customers to travel completely off-grid for extended periods without compromise.

No two builds are really the same, it all comes down to how the customer wants to use it.

The builds that really stand out are the ones where everything’s been thought through properly – solid lithium setups, plenty of solar, energy efficient Bushman fridges, and clean, practical layouts. It means people can head off-grid for extended periods and just enjoy the trip without stressing about power or gear not doing what it should.

Vehicle fit-out tips for anyone planning an upgrade

Two of the biggest tips we recommend to anyone planning an upgraded vehicle are getting these fundamentals right.

1. Proper insulation

Insulating canopies helps reduce internal temperatures, which significantly lowers the workload on both the fridge and the power system.

2. Good ventilation

Airflow is one of the most important factors in fridge performance. Without adequate ventilation, even the best fridge can struggle to operate efficiently.

Getting these elements setup properly makes a huge difference to overall system performance and longevity.
